Get results in days, not monthsResults in days, not monthsSearch ads put your practice in front of a person at the moment they type "Invisalign near me" or "braces for teens". That is valuable, and it is also an easy way to waste a budget on clicks from people researching a school project, looking for a job in an orthodontic office or hunting for a free home kit. This guide shows the account structure we use, the words we bid on and block, how we handle scheduling and how we know it worked.
Account design
A parent comparing teen braces, an adult who wants clear aligners, a mother asking about her seven-year-old and a patient searching your name have very little in common. They need different words, different landing pages and often different budgets. Putting them in one campaign means Google decides who gets your money, and it usually chooses whichever group clicks most, which is not necessarily the group that books most.
We separate campaigns by what the searcher wants. Brand searches, the ones with your practice or doctor's name, are kept apart because they are cheap, convert often and can make an account look healthier than it is. Everything else is organized by patient type and treatment, with each campaign sending clicks to a page written for that person.
Campaign map
| Campaign | Searches it targets | Landing page | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adult aligners and clear braces | "Invisalign near me", "clear aligners [town]", "braces for adults" | Adult page with consult booking and payment options | Evening hours and discretion matter here |
| Teen braces | "braces for teens", "orthodontist for my son", "braces near me" | Teen and parent page, insurance details and after-school times | Parents search, teens influence |
| Early evaluation | "early orthodontic treatment", "orthodontist for 7 year old", "child overbite" | Page on early check-ups and what a visit involves | Keep wording informative and non-alarming |
| Cost and payment | "cost of braces", "orthodontist payment plans", "orthodontist that takes [insurance]" | Financing and insurance page | Searchers here are comparing offices |
| Brand and doctor names | The practice name, each doctor, and common misspellings | Home page or location page | Protect the name and separate reporting |
| Location-specific | Searches tied to a specific neighborhood or office | The page for that office | Use only where an office has capacity and a distinct area |
| Retention and aftercare | "replacement retainer", "retainer broke" | Aftercare page for current and former patients | Run only if you want that work and can respond |
A multi-office group may repeat parts of this map per location or share campaigns with strict geographic limits. We decide with your capacity in mind.
Keywords and exclusions
Intent to find a provider
Orthodontist near me, braces for [age or group], clear aligners near me, Invisalign provider, ceramic braces, orthodontic consultation.
Research with unclear intent
Invisalign vs braces, how long do braces take, braces cost. These can bring useful visitors but also students and curious readers, so we give them their own budget and landing pages.
People who are not patients
Orthodontic assistant jobs, orthodontist salary, orthodontic residency, courses, training, certification programs, internships.
Not a fit for your practice
Home braces kits, DIY aligners, mail-order aligners, braces wax at home, how to straighten teeth without braces.
Searches for a different provider
Dentures, tooth extraction, root canal, whitening, dental insurance quotes, oral surgery.
Control over what triggers an ad
Phrase and exact match for the core terms, with a regular review of search terms. Broad match is used only with strong tracking and tight negatives.
The ad and the page
An ad for an orthodontist should say what the practice does and how to take the next step, nothing more. We write headlines about the service and the location, mention hours and the consult when true, and avoid superlatives, promises of results and claims such as "best" or "most experienced", which many dental boards restrict. If you offer a free first exam, we describe it exactly as your policy states, and we check state rules about advertising free services.
The landing page matters as much as the ad. A person who clicks on "clear aligners for adults" should land on a page about clear aligners for adults, with a booking button above the fold, a phone number that works, a short list of what the first visit involves and a clear note on payment. Sending that person to the home page, where they have to search for the right section, loses many of them. We build or adjust the pages in the website guide to fit.
Scheduling
| Situation | Better approach | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Phones staffed only on weekdays | Run call extensions during staffed hours and push forms and online booking the rest of the time | An unanswered call wastes the click |
| Evening consult blocks | Schedule ads for the afternoon so families can book that evening | Working parents and adults decide after work |
| School breaks and summer | Increase budgets ahead of school breaks and the summer months | Teens and parents have flexibility to start |
| Closed days and holidays | Reduce spending and show a hours message, or pause call features | A closed office cannot answer, so the click is wasted |
| Consult schedule full | Limit campaigns for that office, or switch to a waitlist form | Booking weeks out loses families to others |
Geography
Orthodontic treatment means many visits over a long period, so families care about travel more than for a one-off service. School location, a parent's commute and the direction of traffic all shape what counts as close. We start with the radius around each office, then adjust using your own patient addresses (zip codes only, not names) to see where families truly come from. We exclude areas that sit nearer to another office of yours or beyond a reasonable drive.
Competitor offices sit in the same neighborhoods you do, so location targeting alone is rarely enough. Distance, reviews and hours decide the choice, which is why the ad account and the map listing work best together. See the maps guide for the listing side.
Tracking
We set up conversion tracking for calls from ads, calls from the website, online booking and form submissions, and we send those counts into reports by campaign. For deeper insight, many practices can mark attended exams or starts in their system and share a count, not a name, with us each month, so we can see which campaigns bring families who show up and start. We design this so that no patient names, birthdays or health details go into advertising platforms. Your counsel decides what your setup requires.
Call quality matters as much as call count. A thirty-second call from someone asking about a dentist job is not a lead. With your permission and under your recording policies, we review a sample of calls (with disclosures), look at how the front desk handled each one and flag those that went well or poorly. The conversation is often more useful than any ad tweak.
Launch
We review any existing account, set up tracking, confirm hours and offices and agree on the offers you can actually deliver.
Campaigns, ads and landing pages are written, reviewed by you and checked against your board's advertising rules.
Ads launch with limited geography and budget. We check search terms every few days and add negative keywords.
We compare calls, forms and booked exams by campaign, and discuss what the front desk is seeing.
Money moves toward what books exams, weak ads are rewritten, and we plan the next quarter around the school calendar.

Questions
Managing Google Ads on its own is $895 a month. Adding a second platform brings it to $1,595, and a third to $2,295. You owe no setup fee and sign no contract. Google bills your ad spend directly, and we help you pick a sensible level.
Work backwards from what a started case is worth to you, how many exams it takes to produce a start and how many new exams your doctors can handle. We help calculate a ceiling and then start lower and adjust. We will not quote a general benchmark, because it varies by market.
Generally not as a first move. It can raise costs, create friction and in some cases cause trademark complaints. Better to cover your own brand, local searches and treatments. If you want to test it, we discuss the risks first.
Only if the policy is real and consistent, and only if your state's advertising rules allow it. Free offers can raise bookings and no-shows together, so we pair them with reminders and clear expectations.
Sometimes, when the front desk is staffed and calls are the way most families book. Others prefer a page with a form and a button. We test both with tracking and let the booked exams decide.
Availability differs by category and place and changes over time. We check what Google offers your practice and test it if it fits. See the paid advertising hub for how it fits with other channels.
Yes, and it can help. Ads cover periods when you have not yet built organic visibility, and search data from ads can show which words produce bookings. We keep separate reports so you can see each channel's contribution.
